Mirage Putting Greens International, Inc. of Scottsdale, Arizona recently announced the introduction of its revolutionary synthetic turf system called, Tour-Putt ™. This new turf system was originally introduced at the 1999 Las Vegas PGA Show and was tagged by the media as the "Turf of the Millennium".

The Mirage Turf has been installed in most all environments` from the roof- tops of Manhattan` to the frigid cold tundra of the North Pole` to the hot arid deserts of the West` to the rainy damp areas of Florida` to the basements of the Midwest. Mirage Putting Greens specializes in the manufacturing and distribution of the Tour-Putt Turf System and expedites the product through its Authorized Dealer Network.

The Mirage Turf has been installed in backyards, hotels, resorts, casinos, RV parks, golf pro shops, driving ranges, golf training facilities, miniature golf courses, golf courses, schools, shopping malls, retirement homes, apartment complexes, office complexes, airports, roof tops` just to list a few.

What makes our new Tour-Putt Turf System so unique is the revolutionary interlocking, spring-set, high density, curled, multicolor fiber design that naturally simulates a real bent grass green. Supporting the turf is a thick rubber backing that gives the surface a real grass feel under foot. The proprietary UV treated, multi-color (nylon or polypropylene) fiber design is a one of a kind that allows the putting surface to withstand intense sunlight, as well as the environments associated with the daily outdoor exposure.

Currently, most synthetic putting surfaces require the application of deep sand fill into their fibers. These surfaces require an enormous amount of sand that has to be swept into their fibers in order to support the fibers of low density. Once sand filled, the product is coated with a colored top dressing to help create a more natural look and the fibers that are left sticking out of the sand are then smashed rolled to help create a bent grass affect.

Eventually, the fibers of these greens will lose their integrity and once the sand compacts down into the fibers, the putting surface becomes hard and very fast. Once this has occurred the ball actually rolls across what is predominately sand and matted-down fibers. In time, the sand infill can pack down and/or wash out, thus causing more of the straight fiber to be exposed. These exposed fibers can cause the ball to hop or skip when putted.

Also, when these types of greens are freshly installed they will accept an approach shot, but once the sand infill has compacted and the green surface become very hard, the ball will not bite. The maintenance for these types of greens is much more extensive as they require periodic re-sanding, re-top dressing, rolling, and sweeping to loosen the sand.

The creation of the Mirage Tour-Putt surface was to correct the problems associated with sand filled greens and provide a synthetic putting surface that is literally ready to putt on "right of the shelf". Since the turf fibers of the Tour-Putt surface are very dense, they do not require the addition of deep sand to support the fibers in an upright position. Without sand the ball will have a truer roll, and the green will accept a chip shot much more realistically, as our spring-set designed turf fibers actually grabs the ball, allowing it to check-up correctly, whereas on a seasoned deep sand-filled green the ball hits hard and has the tendency to forward spin and skip across the sand filled surface.

We do, in some circumstances, drop a thin layer of our special infill down into the root of our fibers, this helps deaden the ball land on long approach shots. This process is called "infill assisted". The Tour-Putt material comes pre-bent (spring-set) from the factory and does not require rolling. The muti-colored turf design has been created such that it simulates live grass, dead grass and dirt aggregates, all of which are characteristics of natural grass putting greens. This eliminates the need to apply a colored top dressing.

Putting green speeds are measured by a device that's called a stimp meter. Professional tour greens have a stimp reading between 10 to 12, most municipal course greens are between 7 to 10. The Mirage Tour-Putt models have a stimp reading of 9.6 to 11. The Mirage Classic-Putt turf simulates bermuda grass, much like most municipal greens, which when sand-filled can stimp from about 7 to 10. These are only some of the characteristics that makes the Mirage Tour-Putt the most realistic, maintenance-free, synthetic putting surface in the world.

The Mirage Tour-Putt™ System
To date, most synthetic back yard putting surfaces are installed using several inches and layers of sand fill to stand up the grass fibers, thus causing the putting surface to become very fast. They require periodic broom sweeping to keep the fibers upright and water-rolling to keep the sand level.

Most of these synthetic turf surfaces have a grain pattern that runs one way throughout the carpet, making the ball skip or hop across the grain. Most of these sand-filled greens need periodic sand-fill and expensive top dressing.

To create a ball speed that is required of "tour greens" you need to fill the turf fibers with sand and top dress right up to the top of the fibers. You are putting almost entirely on sand and not the fibers. In time, the sand will settle down or wash out and the sandfilled green can drastically change speed.

Now, with the new Mirage Tour Putt Turf System there is no need for sand-fill, top dressing, sweeping or rolling. Our new turf is designed "off the shelf" to putt just like a Tour Green. Our new Tour- Putt surface stimp meters at about a 10 in ball speed with no sand or top dressing. Our special spring-set turf fibers have been manufactured to naturally stand up and our turf has virtually no grain pattern, thus the ball rolls the same in all directions. The tips of the fibers have been bent to simulate the true roll of a real bent grass green.
